When – and how – was your company born?SunTracker Technologies was founded in 2011 by Ian Ashdown and Wallace Scott. Having worked in lighting research and development with companies such as Philips Lighting and with over 150 patented inventions, we chose to pursue opportunities in the fields of architectural and later horticultural lighting design, including the development of intellectual property for both lighting design software and lighting control hardware.

Who are some of your clients? What projects are you working on right now, and what do they do?
We currently license our OEM software products for architectural and roadway lighting design to software companies in the United States and Norway. Between them, our software is used by some 80,000 professional lighting designers worldwide.

We are also deeply involved in the horticultural lighting industry, including creating lighting design software for greenhouses and vertical farms, developing laser-based luminaires for cannabis production, developing control systems for predictive daylight harvesting in greenhouses and architectural spaces, and serving on international technical committees responsible for developing horticultural lighting industry standards.

What was a pivotal moment for your company?
There has not been a particular moment that could be described as “pivotal.” It typically takes a decade or more for inventions to become fully commercialized. SunTracker has been developing its intellectual property portfolio in support of its OEM products since 2011 and is continuing to do so.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned along the way?
The concept of “overnight success” is the same for both companies and individuals – it is the culmination of many years of hard work.

What does the future 10 years look like for your company?
SunTracker will continue to build upon the success of its principals’ work that began over 25 years ago.
